The impact of limited leave on refugees in the UK

L Doyle, S Cutler and J Lee, Refugee Council, 2010

This small, qualitative study examines the impact of the introduction in 2005 of five years limited leave to remain for newly recognised refugees subject to active review at any time. Some respondents experienced difficulties in accessing employment, education and housing due to limited leave, and others delayed getting married due to concerns over spouse visas. Being granted limited leave caused stress and anxiety as people were afraid of being returned, and felt unable to get on with their lives as they did not feel settled and protected. The report recommends that the Home Office should reinstate the policy of granting refugees permanent settlement at the time when their need for international protection is recognised.
