Ending the detention of children: Developing an alterative approach to family returns
H Crawley, Centre for Migration Policy Research, 2010
This paper draws on an existing body of research in the UK and internationally, to appraise alternatives to the detention of children. The report is intended to inform the government's review into ending the detention of children for immigration purposes. It considers alternatives such as electronic monitoring, supervised accommodation, and case support and contact management. Recommending the latter option, the report argues that a system of case support and management offers the best possibility for ending child detention whilst increasing the confidence and trust in the system needed for families to return, where their cases have been properly considered.
