Trees only move in the wind: A study of unaccompanied Afghan children in Europe

C Mougne, UNHCR, 2010

This report aims to explain why significant numbers of Afghan children are undertaking the journey to Europe, unaccompanied by their parents. In 2009, more than 5,900 Afghan children were smuggled into Europe, and almost half of under-age asylum claims in Europe were made by Afghan children. It has therefore become a growing policy concern for the EU. The report urges all those involved to be more aware of the risks that these children face. It calls for more action in Afghanistan, to ensure that families are aware of the risks of putting their children in the hands of people smugglers, and for all Member States to take account of the security situation in parts of Afghanistan when considering returning children.
