Measuring internal and international migration from the National Pupil Database

This report explores how the National Pupil Database can be used to measure migration to, and between, local areas of England. It discusses and documents how the National Pupil Database can best be processed for this purpose. In order to test the value of the National Pupil Database for migration analysis, the report also describes the demographic, ethnic, and economic characteristics of migrant pupils, both nationally and through indicators for each local authority district.

Asylum levels and trends in industrialised countries 2010: Statistical overview of asylum applications lodged in Europe and selected non-European countries

According to this report, 358,800 asylum applications were lodged in industrialised countries in 2010 – down 5 per cent from 2009, and approximately 42 per cent lower than the decade's peak in 2001, when almost 620,000 asylum applications were made. The UK was the sixth largest recipient of new asylum seekers in 2010 with 22,100 claims. However, in terms of asylum applications per 1,000 of population, the UK ranked 19th with 0.4.
